Not too long ago a package mysteriously arrived from Sth Australia on our doorstep addressed to the cherub.

Upon opening it, I’m sure everyone between NY and Australia would have heard the delighted shrieks. Inside there were TimTams and of course … Vegemite!

Husband’s reaction wasn’t quite so enthusiastic with him uttering “I thought Millie was a nice lady?! What did I ever do to Millie?” as he peered at the package contents and caught sight of the Vegemite. Even the promise of Tim Tams wasn’t enough to lighten his mood!

I know most of you Americans that have tried Vegemite cannot fathom us Aussies and our liking of the stuff. But hey, that’s fine! I for the most part cannot fathom your liking for things like sweet potato with maple syrup and/or marshmallows. That is just so “wrong”!

So with the arrival of this wonderous black stuff, I just had to cook one of my daughter’s Aussie favs.

These can also be made using Bisquick (recipe for Bisquick will follow at the end of this post).

Vegemite Cheesy Scrolls Ingredients:
2C all purpose/plain flour
3tspn baking powder
1/2tspn salt
2T butter or margarine
1C milk
vegemite to spread
grated sharp chedder cheese
**If using self raising flour omit the baking powder

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 200C/400F
2. Lightly grease an oven dish or baking slide
3. Sift all dry ingredients together
4. Lightly rub butter into dry ingredients using fingertips so it starts to resemble breadcrumbs
5. Add the milk
6. Quickly mix into a soft dough
7. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly
8. Roll or press into a rectangular shape max 1cm thick

9. Spread sparingly with vegemite

10. Sprinkle liberally with grated cheese

11. From one of the long sides, start rolling into a log
12. With a sharp knife, cut the log into rounds approx 1inch wide
13. Place rounds onto slide or into dish, brush with a little melted butter or margarine and cover with more grated cheese.

14. Place into the oven and cook for approx 20-30mins until browned and cheese is bubbling.
15. Remove from oven and allow to cool

If using Bisquick:
5C Bisquick Mix
1+1/3C milk
2T butter or margarine (melted)
vegemite for spreading
grated sharp chedder cheese

    Method:
    Preheat oven to 190C/375F
    Combine bisquick and milk in a bowl to form a dough. If dough is too sticky add more bisquick. Alternatively if dough is too dry, slowly add small amounts of extra milk.
    Divide dough into two lots.
    Continue as from step 7 above
