BlackoutSOPA! and other anti SOPA actions
Friday, January 13, 2012
Noticed the following tool today, it allows you to change your profile pic on twitter and to download a copy of it to use on other social networking sites...
So far 10,000+ ppl have shown their opposition of SOPA by blacking out their profile pics.
You can show your aversion to SOPA too via: http://www.blackoutsopa.org/
There is also the Boycott SOPA by Extreme Tech which is a free android app for your smartphone.
From lifehacker.com...
Boycott SOPA for Android Scans Products, Warns You If the Manufacturer Supports SOPAFull article: Boycott SOPA for Android Scans Products, Warns You If the Manufacturer Supports SOPA
Once installed, use Boycott SOPA to scan the barcodes of books, CDs, magazines, DVDs, and other media to see if the producer or publisher is a member of the RIAA, MPAA, the BSA, or another organization that's publicly supported SOPA.
There is also the free firefox add-on Soapy
Soapy is a small, free Fire Fox plugin that allows users to go to web sites banned under SOPA -- making SOPA, if it is passed, moot. It focuses on the DNS-blocking technique favored by oppressive regimes and middle management. Because this is designed to go around a complete block, HTTPS is disabled for sites covered by this plugin.More Info: SOAPY
reddit.com also has a blackout planned for Jan 18
we will be blacking out reddit on January 18th from 8am–8pm EST (1300–0100 UTC).Full article: Stopped they must be; on this all depends.
Instead of the normal glorious, user-curated chaos of reddit, we will be displaying a simple message about how the PIPA/SOPA legislation would shut down sites like reddit, link to resources to learn more, and suggest ways to take action. We will showcase the live video stream of the House hearing where Internet entrepreneurs and technical experts (including reddit co-founder Alexis “kn0thing” Ohanian) will be testifying. We will also spotlight community initiatives like meetups to visit Congressional offices, campaigns to contact companies supporting PIPA/SOPA, and other tactics.
wordpress.org has also weighed in on the issue too...
You are an agent of change. Has anyone ever told you that? Well, I just did, and I meant it.Full article: Help Stop SOPA/PIPA
Normally we stay away from from politics here at the official WordPress project — having users from all over the globe that span the political spectrum is evidence that we are doing our job and democratizing publishing, and we don’t want to alienate any of our users no matter how much some of us may disagree with some of them personally. Today, I’m breaking our no-politics rule, because there’s something going on in U.S. politics right now that we need to make sure you know about and understand, because it affects us all.

Will Facebook, Google, Twitter Shut Down in 2012 to Protest SOPA?
Sometimes in life dramatic action must be taken in support of something you believe in. The Occupy Wall Street movement, albeit scattered in focus, is one of these such actions, as thousands have been arrested for taking a stand all over the world.
If high-level whisperings are true, popular social and search sites we rely so much on for everyday interactions and real-time information might be readying themselves (and us) for an absolute jaw-dropper.
